School Profile |
Berkshire Trail Elementary is located on Route 9 on the extreme eastern edge of the school district, in the town of Cummington. The original school was built in 1951. With a major financial commitment from the towns of Windsor and Cummington, it was expanded and remodeled in 1991. It currently has separate rooms for art and music instruction, a gymnasium, a library, a kitchen/cafeteria, reading, SPED, and eight large classrooms. The current enrollment of students, grades K-5, draws from the towns of Windsor and Cummington We also host a number of school choice students from surrounding towns. Our towns are geographically large and rural.
The staff of the Berkshire Trail Elementary School is a cohesive group of professionals highly committed to children. They are equally committed to professional renewal, and are willing to take risks. Part-time specialists are also present for physical education, vocal and instrumental music, art, and study skills. A one day per week counselor is also assigned to BTES, as are various levels of part time OT, PT, and speech therapy services.
An active and supportive School Council prepares a comprehensive School Improvement Plan for each year. We plan to address issues of curriculum renewal, literacy, an all-school theme devoted to history and social studies, and technology. The School Council and staff will continue their efforts at broadening community support and involvement throughout the year.
Our school is served and supported by an active and talented volunteer staff, especially in the library. We also draw on a broad base of support from the senior citizens of both towns. Our successful Mentor Program has consistently drawn from elders in the communities who assist younger children with unique needs. An active and successful PTO provides many cultural enrichment programs, as well as funding for other programs and materials.
