We have attempted to provide a comprehensive set of thoroughly researched Papers, written in nontechnical language. We wanted to enable parent educators, teachers, psychologists, therapists, pediatricians, social workers and counselors to Pass-Along practical, common sense strategies for dealing with the behavior problems that our discussions with educators and parents indicated were most often encountered. We hope that the reference format makes it easy for you to locate and use the information you need.
You will notice that for some concerns there are many possible solutions. We have found that there is no ONE best way to solve any particular problem.
The Pass-Along-Papers focus on typical, normal childhood problems. Although these concerns are considered normal, they should not be viewed as unimportant and be left to go away on their own. In some cases you may wonder about the difference between normal and abnormal behavior. There are several criteria to help you decide. First, you must consider intensity, as well as how often the behavior causes a problem for the child, parent, or others. If it frequently causes disruption, professional counseling, therapy, or treatment might be indicated. Second, if a child has a number of different problems, this fact may also signal a need for professional intervention. Third, the more age inappropriate the behavior, the more serious the problem. Finally, if the problem has persisted for a long time and seems to resist the positive steps to correct it, more aggressive treatment may be required. Remind parents of the necessity for communicating clearly defined expectations and rules. Also, the techniques suggested in the Pass-Along-Papers won't work unless carried out with faithful consistency.
